Croisillon Dining Chair

The Croisillon is a particular recurring and omnipresent motif in Jean Royère’s designs,
expressed in numerous variations and ranges of furniture. The first drawings of metal Croisillon chairs appear in Jean Royère’s vocabulary in 1946
The backrest, made of metal tubes that interlace and lightly touch each other to define the graphic pattern, sits within a tubular frame that extends to its bent back legs, forming a seamless extension.

  • The Croisillon dining chair appears simple and restrained at first glance, with a thin metal framed seat, tubular metal legs and a latticed metal back, rendered in a uniform colour, creating a striking yet light silhouette.

The frame is made from solid marine-grade stainless steel bar with a square profile forming the seating element. Although appearing rectilinear, the piece is in fact angled on a sides, with the front of the seat narrowing towards the back, as well as the sides of the back decreasing from to bottom, before the back legs kick out again, forming a wasp-waist-like silhouette. The backrest is in-set with a section of latticed tubes, that are individually bent to perfectly fit one over the other, as if woven from flexible cord. This Croisillon panel is what gives the piece its name.

The elegant line of the piece is enlivened by the ball capped feet, the slim legs animated by their rounded feet, as if animated. This playful proportion is a favourite of Royere, used across the Croisillon range.

Available for indoor or outdoor, the Croisillon chair is upholstered with a fitted seat cushion suitable for either environment. The indoor version is upholstered using traditional techniques and natural materials, whereby a base of jute webbing is layered with horsehair, coconut fibre and wool wadding, to provide a soft welcome followed by a supportive comfort. The outdoor model, translates the same level of comfort in outdoor materials, anchored by natural silicone webbing, excess water is able to filter through the open-cell foam structure and freely drain. The seat is covered in either Maison Royere alpaca fabrics, Maison Royere outdoor fabrics or COM.

The Croisillon chair is available in a selection of historic colours, echoing those produced by Royère himself. The metal structure is painted with a hardwearing enamel that is baked on for added strength and longevity. For a smooth, harmonious finish, the piece is mattified by hand, before being meticulously patinated, adding sections of matt and gloss for a look that is neither old nor new, but rather timeless.

  • The Croisillon dining chair, designed in 1947 by Jean Royère, contains a number of distinctive features and motifs that have become synonymous with the designer. The Croisillon motif is not intended as a merely decorative element, but rather as an integral part of the piece’s function. The interlacing of the metal gives shape and structure to the work, forming a structurally solid surface with a visual lightness and sense of transparency.

The crossed metal back, became an intrinsic part of his formal vocabulary, expressed across multiple surfaces and on a broad range of furniture and lighting pieces, becoming a signature of Royere. The pieces were often conceived as matching sets and includes a wide range of pieces, from sofa and armchairs to fitted desks and beds, grouped to form a unified and cohesive environment.

In 1947, the chair was presented at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs in Paris, as part of a bedroom set, matching a baldachin bed, an armchair and dressing table, and a matching chest of drawers in the same range, with vermilion lacquered metal with sage green upholstery providing an elegant contrast.
